Nashville New Wave

Written by Adam Sheets on . Posted in Articles - Southern Heritage

Are you bored this Monday afternoon? If so, I've found something on YouTube that you should watch. It's an investigative report called "Nashville New Wave" from Nashville local TV in 1983. This is a classic example of '80s paranoia. Maybe not on the level of the PMRC hearings or Frank Zappa's "Crossfire" interview, but it's close. For that alone it's hilarious and totally entertaining, but also included here are the revelation that the Replacements were a hardcore band (?!), performances and interviews with Jason & the Scorchers, Ralph Emery's critique of cowpunk, a scene from the 1964 Hollywood film Viva Las Vegas which purportedly demonstrates the rebelliousness of '50s rockabilly, vintage fashion tips, and more. Most importantly, it serves as a reminder that Nashville's music was never just about Music Row, then or now.
